editor refuses to STET
In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand

I'll go first: Six page commercial lease.

STET!

Ahahaha I'm jumping off this to say: I did what I did with the structure of both THE BUTCHER OF THE FOREST and THE SIEGE OF BURNING GRASS on purpose as well. Please trust that my editors said "Are you sure?" and I said "STET STET STET." The books are shaped the way I wanted them shaped.
I just want to say for the record that I knew exactly what I was doing with Countess when I wrote it. I wrote the second half the way I did for a specific reason. A symbolic and artistic reason. Intentionally.
I took a risk. But that is what I'm here for. To be jarring and disrupt. ALSO -

Stet, motherfucker.

There should be welcome mats for the offices of book people that say “Watch Your Stet” on them.

"Stet, stet MOTHERFUCKING STET" is how I actually learned the word stet in the first place.

STET STET STET. This copyeditor is good, so I feel a little bad, but the heart wants what it wants, and that is STET.

Stet
They tell you to develop a thick skin as a writer, but no one can adequately explain what it feels like to hop into revisions and discover that the editor has chosen to cut your hilarious one-liner about cow birth.

I told you back in 2016 that there was a very real possibility that several computer vision systems used in everything from those bullet-vibe security bots to autonomous vehicles very likely had trouble recognizing and categorizing children as human beings, and well, here you go:
Cruise Knew Its Self-Driving Cars Had Problems Recognizing Children — and Kept Them on the Streets
Cruise, General Motors’ self-driving division, knew its cars sometimes had problems detecting children — but kept the vehicles on the road.

Once I tried to get @tkingfisher.com to remove an em dash. She sent me a photo of STET THIS across her knuckles.
That's how you can tell human authors from AI.

AI will put in some em dashes, then apologise and take them out when told off.

Human authors will climb the filing cabinet, hissing, and defend their right to em dashes with a loaded stapler.
Em dashes, like anything, should be used in moderation. Check first with your editor if em dashes are right for you. 😉

When a bad edit comes along, you must STET it
Before the galley's wrong, you must STET it
Who cares if the book's too long? You must STET it

Now STET it
Into shape
Reject change
Accept all
Go forward
But don't move ahead
Until you've checked it
It's not too late
To STET it
STET it good

Wow this copy editor really hates colons.

Unfortunately, I like them. *stet stettity stet*

Please amend as follows:
- replace “seen” with “drunk”
- replace “ten TV shows” with “four temperatures of coffee”
– otherwise stet
I’ve only seen about ten TV shows on the Top 100 list but will happily have a ludicrously overconfident and scathing opinion about it for clicks
