I have somehow never encountered "stichomancy" before! Stichomancy: "divination by lines of verse in books taken at hazard", which was first recorded c. 1693 (Urquhart's Rabelais).

Got home and the impressive "HOMOCORE ANTHOLOGY" book was waiting. Accidental stichomancy: first page opened to was "A Remembrance of the Alley Club, Missoula, Montana".

Chamber's Cyclopædia cites it earlier, which is likely where the OED picked it up. Stichomancy (for words drawn at random from other books/verse) is older. Not to be confused with Rhapsodomancy (which is likely where the I-Ching fits, often used Virgil/Homer, and probably inspired using Bibles)
