Rocky Mountain penstemon (Penstemon strictus) at the Capulin Springs picnic site, in the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico, on June 16, 2026.

A spike of vividly purple flowers, some not open yet, with the individual flowers facing the same direction. The two open flowers look something like a mouth, with three large lower lobes and two shorter upper lobes. The almost-open flowers look just a little like the front end of a whale with its mouth closed. Or maybe that's my imagination at work. The stalk is green with touches of purple. The background is a blurred-out mix of pale pea green and yellow streaks (dry grass, I think).

Think I got one of those after you posted last year. A few flowers 2025. Way bushier this year but flowers a while off. Started seven P. strictus to plant out. Seeds in the freezer all winter. We've got several species/varieties now. You're a good influence when it comes to admirable plants. Ha.
