at this point i think i fear residential four way stops more than stroads as a cyclist because at least on stroads cars aren't blowing through every stop sign in existence. i don't not like the "will this guy follow the law or will he try to kill me" game every 15 seconds between intersections

I practice as much “defensive walking” as I can but until we get rid of all these stroads that I have to cross, there’s only so much I can do.
Imagine if NPR had actually talked to safe streets advocates for this story and learned how the solutions to drivers killing people is not, in fact, victim blaming

"Corridor zoning" amounts to jamming low-income residents into big, bland apartment buildings alongside stroads, where they can serve as a buffer, absorbing all the noise & air pollution cars produce, protecting the precious single-family homes that dominate everywhere around them.

My diagnosis, offered in this thread, is that
1. MSP cut up the city with freeways and stroads to an extreme degree
2. The neighborhoods that are nice to walk IN have nothing to walk TO, and the places with commercial density (incl small local shops) are horrible to walk in—stroads without trees

…it is really shocking how there is almost no culture of walking to things here compared to a lot of MSP’s peer cities. Whether people here drive, bike, or take transit, almost everyone seems to consider it a major inconvenience to have to walk more than two blocks on either end.
