The game is being played on a modded Nintendo Gamecube using the Game Boy Player and the Game Boy Interface software, with the original physical cartridge. Donkey Kong bursts into the warehouse/factory for the Mario Toy Company in the game's opening cutscene when starting a new save file. In the game's intro, DK sees a TV commercial for the Mini Mario toys and wants one, but the store is sold out. Unable to purchase one, DK decides to take a more "direct" approach and just steal all of them from the factory. You know, considering how the market is for things like Pokémon cards, where demand for them is so high that they're almost impossible to get without getting scalped, this scene is oddly relevant for today. Mario confronts DK, also from the opening cutscene. DK has stuffed all the Mini-Mario toys in a large sack, and soon takes off with Mario in hot pursuit. Gameplay from the first level in "Mario vs. Donkey Kong." The game is a 2D puzzle-platformer in a throwback to the 1994 "Donkey Kong" for original Game Boy, featuring six worlds filled with increasingly complicated and intricate levels that call for Mario to not only utilize his jumping abilities, but also figure out the optimal path through each stage through pressing switches. The ultimate goal of every level is to collect all the Mini-Mario toys scattered throughout the stages; collect all of them within the time limit and Mario can move on to the next stage. There are also three presents in each stage that the player can collect to play a bonus game for a chance at extra lives.
