thinking about how hornily you described the permavirgin immature child mayfly subimago

Did you know that Ephemeroptera is the only extant insect lineage that has a winged-yet-sexually immature instar?

Right before moulting a final time to true adulthood, they exist as a "sub-imago". Clouded, softly fuzzy wings, clumsy flight, shorter limbs, genitalia incapable of mating...

Cute!!

So apparently mayflies are one of the only insects to have a secondary adult stage and they molt at adults from a subimago to an imago.

Except the subimago is supposed to be very short and close to where they emerge from the water. This was 24 hours later.

With a name like Sulphur Dun you might think that I smell. I am simply a mayfly subimago. No longer a nymph and not quite ready to date. That awkward in-between stage of metamorphosis, just waiting to pop. At least I don’t smell

Male mayflies have 7 eyes.. they are the only insects known to undergo a second molt after they develop functional, fully formed wings. After emerging from the aquatic nymph stage, the mayfly emerges as a subimago, then after a few hours to a couple of days, it sheds its skin to become an imago. 😲

Wikipedia says they’re a unique insect bc they have a “fully winged terrestrial preadult stage, the subimago, which moults into a sexually mature adult, the imago.”

Could that be what happened here?

It still seems odd since my front door is a ways from any water and the subimago supposedly emerges from the water to a stem where it molts into the imago a brief time later. Not to someone's front door where it sits for a full day.

But you do you, mayfly.

Here's the exuvia (shed skin) of a 4 mm mayfly subimago (flying sub adult) on our dusty window. It's a unique mayfly stage - other insects do not molt again once they have flight-capable wings. The stage is brief - in some species, it lasts only minutes. 🐙 🌿

"The imago usually has transparent wings and a smooth, shiny exoskeleton in contrast to the cloudy wings and dull, pubescent body of the subimago."

We all know teenagerhood is an awkward phase but they didn't need to be this savage about it

I knew this mayfly was sitting on the kitchen window last night and am sorry to have missed it shedding its old skin and becoming significantly longer.

🦋 First description of the female subimago of #mayfly Behningia baei, previously known only as a nymph in Thailand. Based on reared specimens from sandy rivers, the study also documents burrowing behaviour, adding new insight into this rare genus.

you can also see some Mayfly subimago shedding :)

yes! and if you're after mayflies, you can put the subimagos into some rearing chambers and they will soon emerge to the adult. Just need a little cup with something for the subs to cling to.

Word of the Hour: Subimago - A stage in the development of certain insects such as the May flies intermediate between the pupa and imago. In this stage the insect is able to fly but subsequently sheds a skin before becoming mature. Called also pseudimago. #WordOfTheHour #WordOfTheDay
