This bronze statuette shows a hoplomachus gladiator in armed to resemble a Greek hoplite. The hoplomachus wore a bronze helmet, a manica (armguard), loincloth (subligaculum), heavy padding on his legs, & a pair of high greaves reaching to mid-thigh.

For those who are unaware: A subligaculum was a sort of form of underwear worn by Roman men (and sometimes women) that functions a bit like a fundoshi or a breech clout.

On hot days, a worker in Ancient Rome might have worked in only his subligaculum ("cloth tied beneath"), a form of underwear worn by both men & women, made either from a simple square of cloth or a more form-fitting tailored garment, often secured with a simple belt.

Togas also weren't (usually) worn as the only garment. And Romans had a form of underwear called a subligaculum that sort of wrapped around the tender bits in a simolar and way to a fundoshi. Or, sometimes, in the form of a pair of shorts similar to medieval braies.

Romans were a little less comfortable with public nudity than the Greeks, so athletes and gladiators would have gone out in their subligaculum, although possibly adorned with patterns or brightly colored, like modern leotards or banana hammocks for swimmers.

I still find it amusing that there are debates amongst classical historians over the exact form the subligaculum took. I mean, this is the most widely-accepted form, but just the fact there are debates about Roman underpants amuses me.

After changing clothes, and puttin on a light garment called a subligaculum, you might want to do some light exercise in the Palaestra, an open air area. Smaller baths would directly move to the Frigidarium, the cold room, where you could also do exercise or take a dip in the cold room's plunge pool

Post una septimana, castram Romanam visitabo per tres dies. Multa vestimenta ex lana feci: tunicam, focalem, udones, pileum et tabernaculum parvum. Nunc subligaculum facio (non ex lana est). Nunc autumus in Australia est. Frigidum in castra non cupio :) ⛺
