my pet peeve is that its highkey bs to refer to muslim realms in the middle ages as "sultanates" or "emirates" when you dont translate the terms for everyone else. like, ive never seen an englishman call the byzantines a basileate or germany a königreich, so why just for muslims

Today’s big history lecture was on how you get from the Mongols to the Mughals. I talked about the rise of Sikhism in the wake of Babur conquering the Delhi sultanates, turns out several of my students are Punjabi in class and were like “wait! This is about us!”

But I am fascinated by how feudal power gets constrained. Minang culture traditionally values decentralisation, so we've kept our elective system, while other Malay sultanates have become more absolute over time ...

To be honest the figures are generic Indians and can do for the best part of 2000 years. The more specific ones are the armoured horse archers inspired by Muslim troops from the north Indian sultanates. These make it a bit different from other Hindu armies.

Anyway are (say) Javanese sultanates to be regarded as "authoritarian" and "ethno-chauvinist"? Pre-modern states very often didn't do or try to do much, and thus can't be authoritarian. Ethnicity is a recent concept.
