SPACE FACTS: DAY 206/365🧪🔭🛰️

Sungrazing comets pass within a few thousand miles of the sun at perihelion. Such a close passage makes them very bright but also (usually) destroys them. Most follow the Kreutz Path and are likely chunks of a large sungrazing comet that broke apart centuries ago.

There's a nice doom'd sungrazing comet that took the plunge early today visible in SOHO's LASCO C2 imager, a nice way to end the month:

🚨 Newly discovered object, provisional 6AC4721, has been identified as a Kreutz-group sungrazing comet.
In mag. 18, despite being very faint, it shows activity beyond 2 AU. Perihelion is expected in early April 2026. Likely to disintegrate, but scientifically intriguing 🔭

It is very hard to send Jupiter into sungrazing orbit
An alternate Solar System where Jupiter and Saturn got caught up in terrible shenanigans; Saturn is ejected, their satellite system destroyed, and Jupiter got sent into sungrazing orbit, eventually becoming a hot Jupiter.

Inner planets got ejected. Neptune and maybe Caelus barely survived.

Something to 👀. New sungrazing comet in ESA/NASA SOHO/LASCO C3, found last night by citizen scientist Zesheng Yang. It should get pretty bright -- maybe Vmag 5 or so? Right now it's hard to spot, but I promise it'll be easy to see by tomorrow. ☄️☀️ Follow along: soho.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtim...

'Sungrazing'-kometen worden al honderden jaren waargenomen.

Dit zijn kometen die heel dicht langs de zon reizen, waar ze fel oplichten en vaak in kleinere stukken uiteenvallen.
