I digitised the same frame under the same conditions with my Sony A7RIII. It looks similar to the output from the Nikon. Then, I tried it with my Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro, which uses a SuperCCD sensor, and got similarly great results to the Leaf Aptus.

Are CCDs just "better" for digitising film?

Taken on S2 Pro - a 2002 Fujifilm DSLR built on a Nikon F80 body. It used a 6MP SuperCCD sensor with honeycomb pixel layout for filmic colour & beautiful tonality.

...the out of camera jpeg color + image tuning does look good also (good warm yellow-orange, able to get deep contrast with settings, weird old digicam color denoising) - and it does seem to have the sort of more grid-like noise pattern that some early 2000s digicams have which is interesting.

this shot is from a fujifilm finepix s1 pro, a nominally 6.3mp camera that's actually 3.1mp without interpolation.

it ALSO has a superccd, altho an earlier version

i took this with an adapted plastic lens from my diana f+ medium format toy camera
soft, dreamy, heavily vignetted photo of a run down clap trap wood-sided house painted a faded coral. it's surrounded by brush and debris and one window is plywooded over. behind it is a palm tree against the lurid blue sky. it appears to have a christmas wreath on the door but it's actually metal(?) and has writing on it. the plywood sign says, in stenciled letters, "we have and sale (sic) railroad ties"

camera sensors are very much like lcd screens, in reverse: grids of pixels, behind a color filter array. they receive light instead of emitting it

except some aren't grids

fuji invented a sensor with hexagonal photosites ("pixels"). in the gaps… they put extra pixels

Just in: it's still tough to get an X100V, so why not pick up this E900 instead, which many* have called the "Baby X100V." It shares some of the same features: it is a camera, it exists in at least three dimensions, and it requires electricity. Essentially identical by those standards.

same scene as above but the man is almost totally lost in shadow shadows lifted to 100 -a bit grainy but surprisingly little color cast and a much more appropriate and correctable pink instead of the usual green for most cameras

As far as I know, the S8100fd from 2008 has the slightly smaller 1/2.3" CCD sensor and 10 megapixels, while the A900 from 2007 has the SuperCCD sensor 1/1.6" with 9 megapixels. Presumably the result would be better.

The A800 and A900 both have a 1/1.6" SuperCCD sensor. The colors from this sensor are still fantastic.

Yes! Pentax K5-II (and related Nikon 7000) were brilliant, but we also had SuperCCD and Foveon, felt like there were real choices to be made. Now it looks like the budget route is just "3-5 year ago amazing thing that still works brilliantly" - my Panasonic S1 sold for £1K with 24-105... eventually.

My first digital camera was the Fuji FinePix 4900Z and I loved it. It had a 2.4 megapixel SuperCCD that generated 4.3 megapixel images with a 6X optical zoom.

It's also the camera I had when I moved to New York in 2002.

The Fuji FinePix 4900Z. Released in November of 2000, it was a 2.4 mega-pixel camera that "supersized" its images to a whopping 4.3 mega-pixels. Add a 6X optical zoom, and you were DA BOMB. There's one left on Amazon for 75 bucks.

Ran across these oldies #FromTheArchive this morning. These were taken at the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. Made them with a Fuji FinePix S100FS bridge camera. It sports an 11mp SuperCCD sensor. Exciting stuff. These are way more interesting than the photos I took with my Hasselblad.
