Here's a fun question. Astronomers have found that about once per century, sun-like stars are capable of blasting out immense superflares *thousands of times* more powerful than regular solar flares.

So, um... can the Sun do that as well?

We’re overdue for a MEGA solar flare:

In 993 AD an unusually big flare hit the Earth. We know this because the trees told us: hidden in their rings is a spike in carbon 14, an atom created in the upper atmosphere under the bombardment of solar particles.

The largest solar flare on record was the Carrington event from 1859. But astrophysicists now looked at other stars like our own and found that our sun might be able to produce superflares – solar flares that are at least 100 times stronger – once a century.

'Sun-like stars produce superflares roughly once per century

The occurrence rate is about one superflare per star per century. If the Sun behaves like the stars in this sample, then it could produce superflares at a similar rate'

My first, naive reaction to this story: If stars like our Sun produce superflares every 100 years or so, and the Carrington Event happened in 1859, does that mean we're overdue for the next one?

The answer is "not necessarily" and the reasons are interesting! (1/3)
