#superh
also sidenote; as of recent I've noticed that searching for information on the SuperH has gotten more difficult because AI slop articles about entirely unrelated stuff begins showing up.

I'M LOOKING FOR THE CPU ARCHITECTURE, NOT AI BS

LLVM folks really want more than 1 person being maintainers for backends they merge, so I guess I gotta find someone as autistic as me about SuperH to help out maintaining the backend

I think the SuperH got a ton of use in automotive. IMO they should throw a whole Sega Saturn in there

Was watching a @techconnectify.bsky.social video and was wondering, is that CPU in the MCU a SuperH chip?

From what I could find, yeah! SH-2A, SH-7055.

Spent some time today cleaning up some target triple parsing for the llvm SuperH backend. Also defined processor models for most of the series that i could find documentation on.

Finding the true variant names of the Dreamcast and Saturn CPUs was a little bit of a nightmare though.

In SuperH assembly a bunch of instructions act on R0 implictly, additionally indirect loads with displacement are zero extended while the stack grows down. So accessing stack memory involves calculating a base stack offset to positively index from. Clobbering R1

Umm, afaik GCC supports various SuperH versions. Couldn't you throw that implementation source code into an AI and have an ABI doc created? Maybe a useful task for an AI.
September 11, 2026 at 10:18 AM
Sent an email to Renesas asking for some more documentation on the SuperH ABI, let's see if they respond lol

Hit another snag with llvm that’s causing some silly issues. Conditional branches in most architectures have a couple of compare instructions and many conditional branches. SuperH does it in reverse lol

I’m currently in compiler backend hell adding SuperH support to llvm so that I can use clang and ldc2 to compile for the Dreamcast

Been really eepy all night so I haven’t gotten that much done. Mostly just been working on refactoring minish (My SuperH cpu emulator) to be more useful for stuff like automated testing

5 Reasons No Superhero Family Does Legacy Better Than the Flash Family
The Flash isn’t exactly on the level of Superman and Batman, but the various Scarlet Speedsters have been one of the most important parts of the history of DC Comics. Everyone knows who the Flash is, even if they’ve never read a comic, and it’s been that way for decades. The hero’s legacy stretches back to 1940, when Jay Garrick began his race against evil, one that the various Flashes and various related heroes have spent years running. The Flash Family has become one of the most beloved superhero families of them all; they’re the only family that can even match the illustrious membership of the Bat-Family is the Flash Family.

Kinda hitting into wall after wall with SuperH and LLVM. Close to having the backend “done” for SH1-2 but I keep hitting edge cases in how operands work in SuperH. there’s a lot of small nuances to them that is just inferred from the instruction opcode…

Rewrote the SuperH assembler parser yesterday and now it gives better contextual error messages on malformed syntax

I’ve spent all night rewriting the parser for the SuperH compiler’s assembler…

At least I’ve made it spit out more sensible error messages now

I genuinely wonder how game developers who worked on titles between Generation 0I to IX will feel about coding software during Generation XIII: Akin to the SuperH II/PowerPC Era, where a lot of Motorola 68000 coders had a hard time, I wonder if PlayStation 09 will have an easy transition from x86.

I'm writing a toolchain for developing games for retro consoles, eg. the SEGA Dreamcast and SEGA Saturn which uses SuperH processors.

To test my code rapidly I really needed a simulator that could simulate the processors in those devices, so I wrote one.
