The crazy thing is that there's the world's easiest win on the field by just opening up applications for Token Grants on Cool Problems. Then you just announce that as part of Project Supermath, Professor Y has solved the problem of theodicy in partnership with OAI

some speculation here but OAI may be in a situation where they have excess capacity and are looking for opportunities to throw huge chunks of compute at potentially profitable problems.

if that’s correct, man, that creates some horrible incentives around secrecy for other people

Anthropic doesn’t have enough compute to service demand; OAI may be demand-bound instead. if so then they’re in a position where they have however much excess capacity and they just need to find the best thing to throw it at, over and over again
