This bit is in a footnote. Both these figures seem high to me. Maybe Cambridge allows someone to supervise 15 PhD students? 35 externals is high for someone so young.

CFPB is requiring bank examiners to read a "humility in supervisions" pledge before any examination begins, basically apologizing for having the temerity to monitor compliance.

On the weird politico-religious commune in Cambridge: after recent safeguarding regulations came into force, at KCL we are no longer even allowed to meet our PhD students for supervisions in a public cafe.

Oxbridge colleges give their fellows lovely big offices to see students in (and even the old fashioned people who liked a less formal approach to supervisions did it in the pub, not their houses), and you definitely didn’t take your grad students as lodgers.

In many ways the Oxbridge system with small colleges and supervisions/turorials as a parallel mechanism to the lecture and exams process has basically been designed / evolved as neurodivergent-adapted HE.

As a grad student who occasionally did supervisions I either booked a room in college or used the coffee shop in Blackwells (with many many others…)

Making the case for the university is something that university staff & university leaders should be good at. The skills used in lecture theatres, seminar discussions, tutorials and supervisions, in original research, peer review & publishing (for example) should be invaluable. Try a little? 2/2
