...my brain is buzzing with these words. For me, it's just as much cadence, suprasegmentals, prosody, and rhythm as it is semantics, morphology, and etymology.

i guess complex stress patterns only evolve in unison with the disappearance of other phonemes / suprasegmentals, otherwise it would be inefficient to do so. or are there counterexamples in the wild? (im honestly curious)

There's this kind of perspective that stress is always about suprasegmentals and NOT about distributional properties of segments and hyperarticulation. I'm in the latter camp though since in tone languages, it often is the latter. Ditto when you look at articulatory work in non-tonal languages.

From my limited knowledge I guess the “analog” might depend more on the function you’re interested in (creak can be phonemic, can convey stance, etc) but there’s aspects of signing that have been analyzed as suprasegmentals, as prosody, etc. Non-manuals like facial expression are just one of these

So nasality and voicing truly do make all the difference?

Sometimes I hate that my mother tongue doesn't use prosody, tone, nasality, and other suprasegmentals.

I feel like there is a term for that but I can’t remember it. The only thing coming to mind right now is “suprasegmentals” which is stuff that crosses multiple words like in English we have “interrogative tone” or sarcastic tones, where it’s a sentence level feature.

Also like how we say lists.

WTF is a suprasegmental?
