Now suddenly software engineers are just another type of labor. And SWEngs are susceptible to mass layoffs ("downsizing") just like every other class of worker, where for most of the 10s corps needlessly inflated SWEng headcount. I think it's all linked. Our narrative stopped flattering the owners.

"no spaces are allowed in the card number"

fuck you—how about instead of making your sweng applicants balance a red-black tree on a whiteboard you make sure they know about trimming whitespace

I can answer the “engineering genius” question: No, he is not. He was above-average in a time when SWEng was a much smaller and a not highly-contested field. By today’s standards he is below average & would struggle to hold down a programming job.

Love the threads on r/FPGA where software engineers get a peek behind the curtain and have to go 'damn girl, you live like this?' and all the comments are just... 'yup...'

Was that seriously his first programming project? Honestly that explains so much about his dumbass takes on sweng.

and it's even worse if you're not in an 'engineering' role where the big corp decides you don't need real sweng tools.

Setting aside that the xitter post was probably a joke

In hindsight, maybe the conceptualization of junior devs as code monkeys was always a mistake, like what does that phase of sweng actually teach people? People don't usually get promoted out of junior for getting good at self-contained tasks
i’ve worked in tech more than 20 years. it has never been more ridiculous.

I think there's a bunch of stuff going on. One is that, because CS and SWEng are young fields, there's still a lot to figure out. Second, because of just how well industry pays, you almost never get anywhere near top talents as instructors during your education, so you learn a ton 100% yourself.
one thing that i think drives the (bad!) culture in CS and associated fields is the fact that most grad students end up on Twitter and end up pulling the "actually, as someone in tech, i can solve anything" stuff and never get called out for it
i really wish we had more neuroscience/CS/math grad students on here instead of Twitter

Checking on the SWENG furry groups and it seems like we're in another bad phase for hiring w/ some fresh layoffs. I'd personally avoid the west coast until the ship gets righted.

That feeling when something that took you like 2 days of work completely mogs the guy with an engineering degree the client previously hired for months. Arrogant SWEng guy somehow over his head w a basic rp2040 board. Ran the oscillator traces across half the board, including the USB data lines.

I'm writing an article for uni and honestly the stuff I'm finding out as part of researching it is just. Depressing

This isn't even specific to SWEng, it's just... in general (SWEng doesn't have better figures, despite what people may think)

tbh i have the same position as he does on ai, for experienced sweng it's more or less "fine" but for anything else it's kind of really inauthentic and should be avoided

Yoooo, you're majoring in software eng? That's sick. Best of luck from a fellow sweng lifer 🫡

SwEng education in the LLM age has lots of interesting unanswered questions. But a few skills like reasoning about larger systems, structuring code well and communicating about code to others don’t seem to come easily as a by-product of vibe coding whereas it did for handwriting code.

Re: last repost I find that in general sweng/hackers are very eager to decide that the thing they're building is 'hobby grade', then release it to the public or build a larger product on top of it and a year or two later it's Where Did All These Bugs And Exploits Come From?

🇨🇭 As a freelancer and a small agency, I sold SWEng services for over 10 years in Switzerland. NOT A SINGLE ONE of our 4-to-5-figure invoices went unpaid. Unheard of.
🌍 Now that I sell software globally, I realize what a paradise that was. Chasing down payments is not fun. 😒
