SWEs are under SPELLS

not great how I likely missed the window to become one of those SWEs who earn fuck you money and give my loved ones a good future

It’s more like mech pilot than meat puppet.

Identifying the agent is going off course requires all the skills, and the gap between top and median SWEs is larger than ever.

The pilot relies on autopilot most of the time, but that occasional intervention is really important

plumbers getting better offers than SWEs now lol

we matched ~222k job posts with pay against BLS earnings (our team's own data)

SWEs +14% above current pay
electricians +23% · plumbers +22% · auto mechanics +31%
infosec analysts -18%

are trades the new tech? jobs.mobiusengine.ai/research

The rise of AI feels like it has also come at a time of rapidly degrading diversity and social norms for SWEs as well. Values I thought I shared with most people, at least in the Rust space, turned out not to be so shared.

I'm genuinely saddened but what can I do? The dream for me is truly dead.

Ah yes. I too know tech acronyms. Yup yup. Those SWEs making my ISPs all stinky with their MB and GB. Total losers messing up my PSDs.

Just gonna wander around screaming at other SWEs, NONE OF YOU HAVE EVER COMITTED CRIME AND IT FUCKING SHOWS
November 1, 2026 at 12:16 AM
do you know for sure that in an alternative history there would be a bunch of small googles that have the operational capacity of the actual google we have today

would Alice and Bob L5 SWEs, poached to google, have built "better google" elsewhere? (if so, why don't they now? whats the moat?)

SWEs who don't know about medicine or biology feel so overconfident bc they know how to make the computer do things.

Your body is not a computer.
October 27, 2026 at 5:52 PM
i did this one, as it's quoting one that, imo, only targets SWEs; i would not claim that most teacher or biologists could get much out of last years open models (or that they couldn't; i don't even know)

broadly; not really but i do know my audience is mostly SWEs or SWE-likes

Most people are lazy and SWEs reflect the laziness of a typical worker, in any mode of production, because it is a relatively unregulated industry. Bridges, surgery and airlines are low risk avenues due to extensive regulations and strict enforcement. But that only works as well as enforcement does.

Three years ago a significant pop was inevitable, the tech was fine enough for speeding up programming a bit but it was far from replacing anybody. Now most SWEs haven’t written one line of code in 2026 and it’s checked my work in unique fluid engineering problems for me
I have never been paid by any AI company in any way and I think he’s a grifter selling people what they want to hear by predicting 9 of the last 0 AI bubbles popping. Eventually a contraction will happen and people will talk about how Brave and Vindicated he is.
Every single numskull ex-reporter who has been paid off by the AI industry seems to have their knives out for Ed Zitron on Twitter today because he went on The Daily Show's podcast. I don't think it's coordinated, I just think they're all uniformly embarrassed by the same bad hill they're dying on.
October 30, 2026 at 2:34 PM
But... how will they get rid of the remaining SWEs if this fails?
October 27, 2026 at 8:30 PM
Software developer here. I despise AI and the mangers and fellow SWEs breathlessly pushing it on us. Like in art, writing, and music, software engineering should always be human first. We're the reason these activities exist, so we should have the most agency in them.

Half my family is SWEs. I know how much they get paid and how much it good it does for the world.

And I look at my peers in medical science struggling to get by and see the opportunity cost of giving all the world's funding to software guys every day.

… bringing a liquidity crisis in private credit and with it a massive worldwide recession the aftermath of which is going to be hard to navigate for way more than just SWEs.
As you mentioned in your post it is really hard to prepare a navigation plan for such an obviously chaotic future.

It’s not even the idiot swes who can’t code without infinite Claude tokens for me, it’s the fan artists and fan accounts who are CONSTANTLY flipping out over literally everything and who call you a tech bro or bootlicker for telling them they’re terrified over nothing.
October 29, 2026 at 7:49 PM
He was otherwise respectful of my stance (which I found noteworthy) but I assumed I'd never hear from him again.

He just contacted me again. Are tech companies starting to realize that swes who give a shit about their work might be *gasp* desirable?

Job postings for SWEs, manufacturing, and especially engineering, continue their upward inflection from last year.

Even HR roles, generally considered a signal for additional hiring, have finally returned to their prepandemic baseline.
October 30, 2026 at 4:44 PM
I'm trying to pivot to anything DevOps as I believe my technical knowledge would be better appreciated there. SWEs in the industry are conglomerating so many responsibilities it's better to make your own company instead of applying for positions hahah.

RT @davidliuxyz: i'm uniquely qualified to tell SWEs how to write software because i've been vibe coding for a few months off and on

This sums up my experience with it well. My work has gone 0 to 60 with AI use for engineering in the last few months and it's insane. Most of my day now is reviewing PRs from non-SWEs, and sometimes Claude, et al will fix the bug. But it will also make a ton of unrelated changes.
now this is a smart explanation of the problem
