Raquel Montero Estebaranz’s “Mood alternations: A synchronic and diachronic study of negated complement clauses in Spanish” is a revised doctoral dissertation that reconstructs the history of polarity mood (PM) in Peninsular Spanish from the thirteenth to the twentieth century. PM is the alternation between indicative and subjunctive morphology in complement clauses selected by negated matrix predicates that ordinarily take the indicative in affirmative clauses. Like neural synchronization across various brain areas which realize your seemingly conflicting parts could give an account of synchronic but not diachronic unification (also the best solution to the binding problem in perception fwiw)

The dialectical difference is that for the synchronic issue you can posit different parts of the same mind and connect them in a bunch of ways that you can't deploy to connect temporal parts
