🦴🐾 Ancient Super-Predator Found in Egypt

A new fossil, Bastetodon syrtos, reveals a hyena-sized hypercarnivore that roamed Africa 30 million years ago.

Its powerful jaws and sharp teeth suggest it was a top predator.

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Bastetodon syrtos

From Early Oligocene Egypt, "teeth like the cat-headed godess" is a hyenadont known from a skull comparable in size to that of a hyena. Its long, shearing teeth suggest a hypercarnivorous diet powered by strong chewing muscles

Al-Ashqar et al help disentangle this genus by describing a new skull from the Jebel Qatrani formation of Egypt, belonging to “Pterodon” syrtos. Previously only known from a partial maxilla and teeth, they assign it to a new genus, Bastetodon

Mikis Teodorakis’ in ikonik final dans müziği yavaş başlar (syrtos temposu), sonra hızlanır (hasapiko temposu),

From the late Eocene into the Miocene, Hyainaliourid hyaenodonts were widespread throughout Africa, with a diversity of shapes and sizes including some of the largest predatory mammals known to have ever existed.

This small Late Oligocene hyaenodont has a short, wide, robust skull with a reduced number of teeth, showing a specialization for powerful bites and shearing meat. These adaptations helped it munch on hyraxes and anthracotheres in subtropical forests along the southern coast of the Paratethys sea

I'm working on a story that has a Greek dance. As a kid, we danced the syrtos and the kalamatiano, but I'm still doing research. I love this video because the lead dancer is the pirate, and sometimes when he yells, "Opa!" everybody replies, "Argh!"
