My Filipina mother never says the word “rat”, “mouse”, or “rodent” in whatever language (English, Tagalog, Spanish, Cebuano, etc.). She always spells the word out or says “amigos” or “mga kaibigan”, both meaning “friends”. They supposedly overhear and get upset when they are called what they are.

I am deeply immersed in cultural taboos against speaking ill of the recently dead, in with that in mind, I will note that James Dobson showed unwavering devotion and perseverance, more specifically in fighting against AIDS relief and social acceptance of gay human beings.

I think the taboos against commenting on other people’s bodies are generally well founded but there has to be discursive room to talk about the moral injury of being a woman surrounded by aggressive, invasive, and inhuman-looking plastic surgery.
