Taconite is low grade iron ore

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Taconite Motion.

Q: Why do you need tankers to move iron ore?

A: You can move taconite via rail, of course. But it's very, very, heavy. An ore car is dramatically smaller than a standard rail car, and as this railfan forum post puts it, "a loaded taconite train is like ... a coaster wagon filled with concrete."

Well, taconite pellets are conveniently bite-sized...
Trick! Ore treat.

Today at Mesabi Metallics, we kicked off the first new full-scale taconite mining project on the Iron Range in nearly 50 years.

We’re creating hundreds of union jobs and building the green infrastructure of the future.

It’s a big deal.

Ok I had no idea the Edmund Fitzgerald was a contemporary thing for the song, this is like his Toby Keith 9/11 song but about transporting taconite pellets

In Two Harbors and Duluth, Minn. and Marquette, Mich., you'll see so-called "jennies" (specialized rail cars for taconite) driven by rail out onto massive edifices on the lake, "ore docks" where they'll be opened up at the bottom and dumped into a Great Laker via chutes along the sides

What bothers me is that the communities that really lost those jobs have legit scars, and it’s not even primarily them driving this worldview. This is not the work of people who used to be in taconite mining.

Another gullible report from @mprnews.org. This plant in Iowa will never happen. It makes ZERO sense to ship taconite from northern MN to SE Iowa. This is nothing but an election year hoax. bsky.app/profile/kvet...

I actually grew up in this picture and was given taconite pellets as a kid because this is so fundamental to the regional identity

Despite what some Canadians will have you believe, their contract was actually to deliver taconite to the steel mills on Zug Island in Detroit.

don't forget to leave a taconite sphere under your pillow tonight for the Witch of November so that all sailors may safely reach shore.

I'm obsessed with iridescent plants, and this Begonia Taconite has been growing so well for me!

But then there would be no use for that imaginary 400 mile taconite pipeline.

They think they’ll run taconite down the Mississippi? (On Tuesdays? Taconite Tuesdays 😬)

Seriously ships like these give the necessary economy of scale on the Lakes
