A Taiwan per esempio il più usato comunemente è ancora il Wade-Giles; per i nomi di località, nomi personali, etc etc. In pinyin Taipei si scriverebbe Taibei, anche se in Wade-Giles il modo corretto per scriverla sarebbe Tʻai-pei

Not sure what is going on with Taipei. Tai means tower. The three big cities are Taibei, Taizhong, and Tainan / north, middle, and south tower. And the Taiwan means “bay tower”. So those should all be the same

So, when you hover over a location on a Taiwanese map, the name could be in: Wade-Giles, if it’s an old name that has become iconic and no one wants to change it. ‘Taipei’ is an example; it should be spelt ‘Taibei’, with a b, in pinyin. Nowadays, people also drop the apostrophes and hyphens from writing Wade-Giles names, even though they are an essential part of the system, and if you ignore them, you get an inaccurate impression of how the word is supposed to be pronounced. Tongyong Pinyin, if the street opened between 2002 and 2009 and/or is in a strongly DPP constituency, e.g. Jhongli District. Hanyu Pinyin, if the street opened after 2009, and/or is in a strongly KMT constituency. Some place names mix systems within the same word, e.g. the name ‘Taichung’ mixes Hanyu Pinyin and Wade-Giles. There are some older romanisation systems, other than Wade-Giles, that have influenced modern spelling. Eventually, I gave up on trying to understand this, because it was getting too complicated.

Dabei heißt die Stadt 臺北 - mit dem gleichen 北 ("Norden") wie in Beijing, so dass die Stadt eigentlich Táiběi ausgesprochen wird.

This is where my expertise tends to fall down.

I have been there twice, once strictly to Taibei for 4 days and once where we did get to do some travelling during an 8 day visit.

And the major fault is that this was all last century!

I think I shall resign from proffering opinions on 台灣 (Táiwān).
