Scientists in Taiwan have uncovered vast, previously unknown forests teeming with towering trees that store significant amounts of carbon, highlighting their critical role in environmental conservation. The research, published in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change, details the discovery of these ancient ecosystems, which are among the most carbon-dense in the world. The study focused on the 'Tao Tree' valley, home to Taiwan's third-tallest tree, and found that the forest's total carbon density reached 1,384.5 Mg/ha, comparable to renowned old-growth forests. These 'trees that hit the moon'—a poetic reference to their immense height—serve as natural guardians of the environment, sequestering carbon and supporting planetary health. The findings underscore the importance of protecting such ecosystems, which face threats from deforestation and climate change.
