晩春 (Late Spring) by 竹久夢二 Yumeji Takehisa (Japanese) - Pen, pencil, and watercolor on paper / 1926 - 夢二郷土美術館 Yumeji Art Museum (Okayama, Japan) #womeninart #art #JapaneseArt #夢二郷土美術館 #YumejiArtMuseum #竹久夢二 #YumejiTakehisa #掛軸 #美人画 #JapaneseArtist #TaishoRomanticism #大正ロマン #JapaneseRomanticism #1920s
Taishō Roman (大正ロマン or 大正浪漫) was the cultural and intellectual movement of Japanese Romanticism during the Taishō era (1912-1926), influenced by European Romanticism and the belle époque. Takehisa Yumeji (竹久夢二 ), the painter who epitomizes Taisho Romanticism, was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1884. He received no formal art training but, entirely self-taught, developed his own painting style. The 美人画 (bijinga, portraits of beautiful women) by Takehisa portrayed women in such a distinctive manner that it became known as "Yumeji beauty style" (夢二式美人). His works show a sympathy toward women in general, who at the time were socially and politically oppressed. Yumeji developed this poetic and minimalist yet romantic style after meeting his first wife Tamaki, but it has also been attributed to the strong relationships he had with his mother and older sister. His gentle interpretations of feminine qualities like a fragile s-shaped curve or large, moist melancholy eyes (modeled after Tamaki's), led to a lasting influence on the art world's depiction of Japanese women that continues to this day. His works also show the influence of Art Nouveau, which was popular in the late 1890s, as well as the "Edo style" and "exotic style" of art that influenced Japanese cultural figures during the late Meiji and early Taisho eras. In "Late Spring," A young beautiful Japanese woman is kneeling on the floor, dressed in a kimono of navy blue and gold latticework pattern with a red and pink obi (sash). Her melancholic expression is accentuated by her large dark eyes. Her hair is styled in an updo, typical of Japanese hairstyles in the era. Next to her is a blue book and a tabby cat looking away attentively while sitting up on a pale pink cushion. The artist's delicate brushstrokes and harmonious soft color blending create a sense of tranquility that has been interrupted by something off canvas drawing the attention of the woman and the cat.

An early 20th century sketch by the acclaimed Japanese painter, poet, and illustrator Takehisa Yumeji (竹久 夢二, 1884–1934).
A sketch by the acclaimed Japanese painter, poet, and illustrator Takehisa Yumeji (竹久 夢二, 1884–1934).In the lower right corner, Yumeji's distinctive square seal bearing the hiragana character “よ” (Yo) is clearly visible. The work epitomizes his signature Yumeji-shiki Bijin (Yumeji-style beauty), defined by slender limbs, an elongated S-curve posture, expressively stylized hair (sokubatsu), and a contemplative, downcast gaze. Executed in fluid, sweeping brushstrokes of sumi ink, the piece combines a clean modernist economy of line with traditional Japanese brushwork. By depicting a woman draped in a casual garment seated backward on a Western bentwood chair, the composition perfectly embodies the spirit of Taishō Romanticism, seamlessly fusing Western modernism with native Japanese aesthetic sensibility.

Gofukubashi in Edo, by Takehisa Yumeji (1884–1934), early 20th century, Japan
A square-format color woodblock print titled Gofukubashi in Edo by the highly influential Taishō-period artist Takehisa Yumeji (1884–1934) captures a bustling historical waterscape reimagined through a lyrical modern lens. The composition exemplifies Yumeji’s signature Taishō Roman style, which fuses traditional Edo-period ukiyo-e motifs with a nostalgic, Western-influenced romanticism. The right foreground is dominated by two young women—classic examples of Yumeji’s celebrated Yumeji-gata (Yumeji-style beauties), noted for their slender, melancholic grace. One woman stands elegantly in a vibrant reddish-pink kimono patterned with geometric grids and a pale sage-green obi (sash). She gazes down at her companion, who leans back against a wooden bridge railing in a striking, supple pose. This second woman wears a soft green kimono with small white square patterns, paired with a bold, contrasting black and white obi. Their hair is styled in loose, voluminous variations of the traditional nih髪 style. The bridge overlooks a lively harbor and canal scene. In the lower left, workers unload cargo from flat-bottomed wooden boats onto a stone wharf lined with traditional white-walled storehouses (kura). A prominent sailboat in the center canal carries a sail inscribed with bold calligraphic characters, while other ships dot the blue waters leading toward a distant bridge in the mid-ground. The background landscape features classical Edo iconography, including a tiered castle tower and the pale, distant silhouette of Mount Fuji rising beneath a flight of three graceful white cranes. A large, green square cartouche containing archaic white script anchors the upper left corner, while decorative rectangular labels flank the upper right, finalizing a poetic and masterfully balanced design that celebrates both historical dress culture and avant-garde graphic layout.
