And of course the geology is amazing.
Columbia River Basalt cliffs in the John Day River canyon. Looking up a talus slope toward the source. A trail leading toward an overhanging basalt cliff. Basalt overhanging the trail along the river. Don’t think I didn’t notice all those piles of rock that have fallen from the overhang in spots.

Columnar basalt, with distinct pillars formed by slow, even cooling of thick lava flows, causing the rock to contract and fracture into geometric columns. The large pile of fractured rocks at the base is known as talus, formed by erosion of the cliff face.

oil on canvas
16” x 22”

An oil painting of the basalt cliffs receding back with at least six different planes. A lake can be seen between the fourth and fifth planes. The sky has some orange in the center near the horizon. There’s a piece of snow, a white squiggle in the foreground talus. The very front foreground shows some sagebrush colors and light yellow. Some of the shadows on the rocks are very dark blue calling attention to themselves as paint more than descriptors of the land. The lake is a turquoise color.
