He used to, after a few insane tangents, be self aware enough to bring it back to the point. Now it is just tangents all the way down.

I have recently learned that not everyone goes on 2-5 tangents in every thought they have, and keeps track of those tangents as if they are brackets which need to be closed

One of the many reasons Don't Call It Mystery rocks is how everyone reacts to the rambling genius tangents with a desperate plea for silence and freedom from talking to the protagonist.
A bus hijacker with a knife starts toying with his captives, demanding that they provide an answer for why they believe killing is wrong. Totonou takes him up on the thought exercise, going on a nine page & counting monologue about the ethics of killing that makes the hijacker regret he ever asked.
