Would not have guessed Republicans supported forensic taphonomy. The guy sure looks like he’s got a low TBS.

It's our best attempt to communicate the smallest unit of a population linked by shared traits/common ancestry, but we suck at defining it, the edges are always fuzzy, and fossils make it even fuzzier? Please let me go back to taphonomy and its equifinality problem. It's safer here.

4/ Those interpretative challenges include: 🔹 #taphonomy 🔹 the inability to directly observe behavior

Inference from fossil evidence must therefore be made carefully and explicitly. 🔬

There’s a lot of taphonomy in there, too 😬

Taphonomy questions like that are fair game anywhere, though. Cut marks, burning and the age classes that turn up usually sort hunted rabbits from coyote scat pretty quickly. Digested bone also has a telltale polished, pitted look.

We spent two wonderful days sharing research and ideas with colleagues from different disciplines, exploring how taphonomy helps us understand past ecosystems and human behaviour.

Many thanks to the organisers and everyone involved for such an inspiring meeting!

We are looking for someone who wants to work on the unanticipated community ecological effects of tool use (I.e. on soil microbes and eukaryotes of varying flavors) and/or model and empirically study the metapopulation ecology of tool sites as a function of behavior and taphonomy

Study of faunal evidence as predictors of #neanderthal occupation sites, long stay or brief stops?
'Anthropogenic modifications and the number of exploited taxa show the strongest correlation with occupation duration'

Faunal Evidence and the Duration of Occupation: A Statistical Approach to Neanderthal Archaeological Sites - Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory
The duration of Neanderthal occupations of caves and rock shelters is one of the most debated issues in prehistoric archaeology. Several disciplines, including lithic analysis, micromorphology, zooarchaeology, taphonomy, and spatial archaeology, have proposed criteria to estimate occupation length, but their reliability varies. This study focuses only on indicators derived from faunal assemblages and evaluates their effectiveness through statistical testing. Four features were analysed: number of taxa, hunting spectrum, anthropogenic modifications, and evidence of carnivore activity. These characteristics were applied to a dataset from Late Mousterian sites in Spain and south-eastern France (70–40 ka) that have previously been examined through multidisciplinary approaches. The results indicate that the four features do not provide equally robust signals. Anthropogenic modifications and the number of exploited taxa show the strongest correlation with occupation duration. In contrast, the number of taxa and carnivore activity, when considered alone, are less reliable indicators. Multivariate analyses reveal a clearer structuring of the faunal assemblages. Brief stopping places are consistently distinguished from longer occupations. However, long-term occupations and repeated short-term occupations tend to overlap, largely because of palimpsest effects. Overall, these findings demonstrate both the potential and the limits of faunal criteria. They highlight the need for integrated, high-resolution approaches to reconstruct the duration and intensity of Neanderthal occupations.
