AFL premiership player Isaac Smith has weighed into speculation about the future list-building strategy of Tasmania’s incoming AFL expansion side, the Tasmania Devils. The discussion centres on whether the new club should aim to secure young stars Nick Daicos or Harley Reid as foundational marquee players for their inaugural squad. According to Smith, the Devils would be better served targeting Harley Reid over Nick Daicos. While both players are regarded as generational talents with the potential to shape the competition for years to come, Smith’s view reflects a strategic preference based on list needs, player profile, and potential availability. Nick Daicos, already established as one of the AFL’s elite midfielders at Collingwood, is widely seen as close to untouchable given his importance to the Magpies and his strong ties to the club. Harley Reid, meanwhile, is viewed as a rising powerhouse with significant upside and the potential to become a dominant force in the competition as his career develops. The conversation highlights the broader challenge facing Tasmania’s recruitment strategy ahead of its entry into the AFL: balancing immediate competitiveness with long-term talent acquisition. Expansion clubs typically rely on securing high-ceiling young players and strategically targeting emerging stars who may be more attainable than entrenched superstars at established clubs. Smith’s comments contribute to ongoing debate among AFL analysts and fans about how Tasmania should approach its list build, particularly in identifying which elite young talent could realistically be lured to a new club and become a cornerstone of its future success.
