I only discovered this when I moved some terms from categories to attributes. The attributes are not automatically applied to the products, even if the association is there in the database. There's an extra step required that I had to write a whole WP CLI command for:

I generally find it more useful to try to capture specific artistic movements/aesthetics than trying to do taxonomoy (ie. I'm a "avatar is anime" guy), so in that sense "retro" would be static nes-to-ps1 kinda stuff
