Also, as a tangent, I'd love to see more of this kind of thing on #academicsky. More sharing of tools, ideas, and resources for teaching, not just endless doom amd gloom.

We should share our hard-won knowledge about pedagogy as eagerly and as often as we share our research!
Here you go! I'll write some new ones for this semester too. They loved them. The "read without your phone or screens in the room" was a revelation, and many of them decided to keep doing it. They had NO IDEA (& were horrified) how often they interrupt themselves to look at a phone for no reason.

It took 60ish people 3.5yrs to put together these 250 000 words and bring into being the world’s first Handbook of Teaching Public Policy 📖 🌟

What a privilege it was to edit it. Big thanks to my co-editor Philippe Zittoun and all the authors!

Going off this, what were people's biggest course design successes and failures this term? #TeachLearnSky
This semester, I decided to experiment with having no word limit on my four hour final exam. I have learned my lesson.

Semesterly reminder to everyone - Canvas in many cases defaults to showing students the course's grade distribution and student's place on it.

If you *don't* want your students to be aware of where they "rank" at all times, take a second to double check it's turned off.

Helpful resources in the replies
I used to teach a “how to do college” class to students on academic probation and I have good news!

This problem can be fixed with direct reading instruction at the university level. You have to teach them how to do phonics, how to navigate texts, how to take notes and how to interrogate a text.

Can interleaved retrieval practice enhance learning in classrooms? The unequivocal answer here is yes, especially when it comes to longer term retention. The results demonstrate a cost-effective strategy to promote classroom learning. #EduSky

@karencosta.bsky.social @empittsdonahoe.bsky.social Amazing discussion about our “active learning scope of practice” last week. We barely scratched the surface. One of those rare CTL golden moments when participants say, “We want more of this, please!” Here are a few highlights: /2

It's spring syllabus time! Anyone teaching courses with something on international security institutions? eg alliances, arms control, regimes (sanctions, counterterrorism), or institutional design with security cases? I am designing a new class and looking for ideas on good readings.

OpenAI's "moonshot" for education includes the creation of something it calls "study mode." The thing about study mode is that it's a complete f'ing joke.
