I wish that the term "technosphere", which academics use in earnest, didn't sound like a mid-tier Berlin club

@alexahagerty.bsky.social:
Europe is having a summer of record-breaking heat. Forests are burning and hospitals and schools are overheating. But one place is staying cool: data centers. A new...essay on AI, climate, and the 30-trillion-tons of human-made stuff that geologists call the technosphere.
What Weighs More Than All Life on Earth?
This summer, while hospitals and schools overheat, data centers stay cool. A dispatch on AI, climate, and the technosphere.

Planetarity and the technosphere: a ‘planetary turn’ for archaeology, inviting archaeological geocentrism to become Copernican, to see terrestrial conditions as only one instance in a plurality of worlds.

#Birds as archivists of the late #Anthropocene; what a fascinating piece of research into the intersection of nature, the technosphere, and material culture.
JUST OUT! 🚨 Time capsule birds' nests! 🪹

I'm proud to share our discovery of layers of vintage plastic in urban birds’ nests... going back decades in time! 👀

The UK gov has finally released the Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security report. We face catastrophe. Why aren't politicians acting? I think some are - but in ways perhaps just as frightening.

My latest for Technosphere Earth. I eagerly awaited @unep.org new Overshoot report. It delivers in many respects & should serve as an important reference. But it missed a major opportunity to frame the overshoot moment.

All this talk about dangerous superintelligence, control and the planet obscures this very important insight. Humanity is floundering within a technosphere out of our control on a planet we barely understand. There is a lot of stuff that can really hurt us, and I doubt we know all of it.

Even worse: Vernor coined the term as a *metaphor* —he wanted a way to flag what it would mean if H. Sapiens stopped being the pace-setting species in our technosphere.

STEM education tends to produce overly literal-minded graduates. (Liberal Arts tend to do the opposite.) We need a synthesis.
