Remote surgery (also known as cybersurgery or telesurgery) is the ability for a doctor to perform surgery on a patient even though they are not physically in the same location. It is a form of telepresence.

we already do it for telesurgery to great effect! it's fantastic technology. and wasted in precisely the way you suggest.

No it's still the same old shared CPU, so running a telesurgery control app in a window with a 3d teapot on the wall paper is a bad idea.

Absolutely incredible account of this robotic / telesurgery which took place in Gibraltar 🇬🇮 (my mother's birthplace!) operated by a surgeon in London! #wato

We won the best demo award at ACM HotMobile 2025 😀

We showcased a remote human and robot collaboration XR demo from Boston to California in real-time. I never had any confidence in telesurgery over the Internet until we built this.

So many cool applications with remote human-robot collaboration.

That's right. Only give your daughters books as least as advanced as post-quantum cryptography, cuneiform inscriptions, or brain telesurgery.
Or even better, books on post-quantum cryptography *written in* cuneiform inscriptions *delivered by* brain telesurgery.

I'm genuinely surprised: a robot just did heart surgery from Guyana to India, about 12,500 miles, with only 290-300ms latency! This means expert surgeons can reach patients across continents, opening up access to specialized care.
