#tempdb
Two temp tables walk into tempdb.
Standing room only. A window function is asleep on the floor. A table variable keeps telling everyone it has statistics. It does not.

You're testing a query, and you're just not getting the same performance between the development and production servers. There's a huge list of common things that might be causing it: Parameter sniffing Different database-level settings like compatibility levels and cardinality estimators Different server-level settings like CTFP and MAXDOP Different hardware capabilities, like different numbers of cores available, memory grant sizes available, or TempDB speeds…

My window function spilled to tempdb.
Tempdb was fine with it. Tempdb has seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Window functions that keep their memory grants to themselves: my #PASSDataSummit West precon.

Skip().Take() works local, dies prod. EF Core nests ROW_NUMBER, blowing tempdb. Fix: Project DTOs + keyset pagination (WHERE id > lastId). Read your SQL. #dotnet #efcore

That's because @brento.bsky.social has said that TempDB is the SQL Server equivalent for a public toilet. It's what the model knows.

Temp tables in tempdb: friend or foe? I asked, and nine bloggers answered for T-SQL Tuesday #201.

One of them built a lab. Another swears by CTEs until the exact moment they fall apart. And I took my own dare to see whether I could beat a temp table without one.

I'm not going to spoil any of it here. The good stuff (and the numbers) are in the posts.

All of a sudden, client has crazy PAGELATCH_UP waits. Tempdb is configured correctly, SQL Server version is 2019 CU21.
"Don't restart" I said. They restarted. Problem solved, ready to bite again tomorrow.
