The Western Australian government has faced criticism for inadequate planning regarding the rapid increase in school enrollments across Perth, particularly in newer schools established since the Labor government took office nearly a decade ago. Opposition education spokesman Liam Staltari accused the Department of Education of relying on demountable classrooms to accommodate growing student numbers, with over 4,000 such temporary structures now in use across WA schools. Staltari noted that nearly one in six classrooms is a transportable, forcing students and teachers into temporary buildings that do not meet educational standards. A parliamentary document reveals that 30 new primary schools and eight secondary schools opened since 2017 have significant numbers of temporary classrooms, with Wellard Primary School (opened 2018) and Oakwood and Aspiri primary schools (opened 2019) having more than half of their classrooms as demountables. Riva Primary School currently has 38% of classrooms as temporary. Education Minister Sabine Winton defended the use of temporary buildings as a cost-effective solution for rapidly increasing capacity, stating that modern transportables are an important tool alongside school expansions and new constructions. She confirmed 11 new primary schools and two high schools will be built by 2030 in fast-growing areas including Alkimos, Banksia Grove, Piara Waters, Treeby, Brabham, and Vasse. Winton also mentioned that existing schools like Brabham, Harrisdale, and Highgate Primary Schools are undergoing expansions to reduce reliance on temporary classrooms. The minister highlighted that schools opened under the current Labor government have more permanent classrooms compared to those planned under the previous Liberal-National Government, with the three schools having the highest percentage of temporary classrooms being established under Labor. The government's approach contrasts with the WA Liberals, who committed only 16% of the funding provided by Labor at the 2025 election.

The Olentangy Local Board authorized staff to negotiate GMP #1 with Robertson Construction for High School 5 (site work, structural steel and long-lead items) and approved a bid to glass-in Berlin High School's extended learning areas for use as temporary classrooms; both items were approved as part of the superintendent's consent package on June 1.
