There are currently 64 criollo (native) varieties of maize (corn) in Mexico, although the most common species are:

Teocintle
Blue maize (zea azul)

I've noticed over the years that place names that include "milpillas" usually have teocintle, e.g., La Paz de Milpillas... milpilla is used for teocintle, as in milpa-like, milpa being a maize plant...

Thanks!! The one near Ixtlan sounds promising... I was in Coapan (behind Ceboruco volcano) near Jala and Ixtlan and was told that there's teocintle in the hills above the town. Acaponeta may be a stretch, but still plausible. Also, west of Ixtlan there's plenty of teocintle along the Ameca river...

Oh, and the basin is key... though there is teocintle further towards coast, lower elevation, up to ~1800 m for annual species, maize ancestor

México celebra el 29 de septiembre el Día Nacional del Maíz, una fecha oficialmente decretada en 2019 para honrar al grano ancestral que constituye el pilar cultural, histórico y económico de la nación. Con un consumo promedio de medio kilo de maíz por persona al día, la efeméride resalta la importancia de garantizar la soberanía alimentaria y defender las semillas nativas frente a las variantes transgénicas. El país alberga 64 razas registradas de maíz, de las cuales 59 son nativas, reflejando una estrecha relación con las comunidades indígenas, donde cada raza recibe nombres propios según el idioma originario. En 2023, México produjo 27,549,918 toneladas de maíz grano, representando el 87.8% de la cosecha nacional de granos y posicionándolo como el sexto productor mundial. La Ley Federal para el Fomento y Protección del Maíz Nativo, promulgada en 2020, declara a la semilla como patrimonio biocultural y establece el Consejo Nacional del Maíz Nativo para su resguardo. Este esfuerzo se vincula con el derecho fundamental a la alimentación nutritiva, suficiente y de calidad, y se alinea con la Agenda 2030 de la ONU, específicamente el Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible número 2, que busca erradicar el hambre y fomentar un modelo agroalimentario sostenible. I don't think you can count google ngram to correctly estimate when either of those entered Spanish. Chipotle is originally chilpoctle, and you also find examples of teocintle in early texts.
