New looking workers of B. pascuorum still actively foraging for nectar and pollen in the Dordogne, France. Also some B. terrestris gynes and workers about - but none seen collecting pollen.

So excited to today start a NERC-funded visitation at @nerc-eof.bsky.social @sheffielduni.bsky.social! I'll be metabarcoding bumblebee-foraged pollen and nectar, aiming to uncover season-long forage choice in comparison to colony stage, floral diversity, and land-use. Decent place to be for a month!

My latest worker record is early December, they seem to be on the tail of Bombus terrestris for going through the winter.

Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) was first recorded in England by herbalist and apothecary John Parkinson in 1629. In his seminal horticultural work, Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris he credits John Tradescant and his son for the introduction of several plants from the US.

Tribulus Terrestris Benefits for Men: An Honest Review

Tribulus is one of the best-known men's herbs. Some research supports it for drive and satisfaction; the testosterone story is weaker than marketing suggests. Here is the balanced view.

Sustained exposure to high dietary ethanol impairs bumblebee survival and locomotor performance
Ethanol occurs naturally in sugar-rich foods used by insects, but its effects in bees have been studied primarily in honeybees. We tested whether dietary ethanol affects survival and locomotor performance in workers of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris (L.). In the survival experiment, workers were fed ethanol (0, 1, or 10%) for 21 days; in the locomotor experiment, they were fed the same doses for one or seven days, after which we measured spontaneous movement using an open-field assay. We measured the proportion of time in movement, speed of movement, path meander (curviness), and arena exploration. The 10% ethanol concentration greatly increased the risk of mortality, whereas the estimated effect of 1% ethanol was smaller and statistically inconclusive. In terms of locomotion, the largest differences occurred after seven days of exposure to 10% ethanol. Workers in this treatment showed greater path meander and lower exploration than control workers. Speed was also lowest in this group. Evidence that exposure for seven days was worse than for one day at the same concentration was detected only for exploration. No clear locomotor effect was detected at 1% ethanol exposure. These findings provide comparative data on sustained ethanol exposure in bumblebees and show a strong concentration-dependent contrast, with substantial effects under high-concentration challenge but no clear effects on the measured endpoints at 1%.

The Bank of England has chosen the four animals for its next banknotes:

hedgehog 🦔
puffin (no puffin emoji 🥲)
barn owl🦉
bumblebee 🐝

500,000 people voted, a record for a banknote consultation. Lots of security work is going on behind the scenes, so the first notes are due over the next few years.

To celebrate today's news that a #WeeBee, specifically a Buff-Tailed bumbler, has won a vote to feature on Bank of England notes, here is one of the little darlings in my garden earlier this year.

A bit surprised that there still are bumble bee queens in the garden. I expected that the all had found a cozy place to hibernate by now.

So ... not only must I up my game when it comes to spring bulbs, late perennials are next.

Super cool research: spontaneous problem solving in bees.

In humans, this is like being handed a hammer and nail for the first time: If you’ve never seen either, you’re lost. If you’ve only seen one, you’re still stuck. But knowing what both do separately, there’s a chance you can work it out.
Spontaneous problem-solving in bumble bees
Problem-solving using novel solutions without explicit training is often considered a hallmark of cognitive flexibility. We investigated whether bumble bees (Bombus terrestris) could solve a novel obj...

Such an adorable bumblebee, likely a buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris), resting on a purple flower. They frequently rest on flowers to conserve energy when they get tired while gathering food.
