You can just about make out the Tewitfield Locks (aka Northern Reaches Locks) driving along the M6 north of Lancaster. Unfortunately they are no longer in use, and blocked off by the motorway at the top end. Progress to Kendal, on a bike or by foot, is somewhat hindered #cycling #Canals #UKCanals

The derelict locks at Tewitfield (aka Northern Reaches Locks) run alongside the M6 north of Carnforth, and can be seen from the motorway. Boat passage further north is blocked by the M6, although an intrepid cyclist can still navigate to Kendal #cycling #UKCanals #canals

A couple of days up north in my home county(s), starting with a ride from Oxenholme to Lancaster down the Lancaster Canal. Tewitfield locks are now sadly no longer in use, due to the M6 being piled over the canal just beyond the top lock - drawings to follow... #canals #cycling #UKCanals

Navigable on slim tyres (and boat) from Glasson Dock in the south, to Tewitfield in the North. Then it gets Quite degraded and I haven't ridden it much past there. Wonderful bits at Scotforth, for wildlife (like herons), through Lancaster, and Lune aquaduct. Grassy north of Carnforth.

This section of the Lancaster Canal at Tewitfield runs alongside the M6. Behind the camera the A6070 crosses the motorway, which has severed the canal. Everything south of here is busy with inland waterway traffic including narrow boats and leisure craft. Northbound all is quiet and unsuitable for navigation. Nature is reclaiming the water, although the towpath is kept clear.

Seen here from Moor Lane Bridge (no 102), the canal winds its way round the eastern edge of Lancaster city centre. It will continue north over the River Lune to the modern limit of navigation at Tewitfield beyond Carnforth but some way short of its original terminus at Kendal.

I wouldn't bet on it, knowing how govt thinks these days. Look at HS2. Still got the canal to tewitfield from Preston which is fully open as far as I know.
