Wish Thawte never happened
I bought my first cert from Thawte in 2002. They were expensive and the process was long and laborious, for sure. But, they did require documentation proving you were who you said you were in relation to site ownership. There is something to be said for that.....

I secure all my services that I provide to my family via Let's Encrypt and Certbot. I remember the days of paying $200+/year to Thawte and... well... LetsEncrypt is amazing by comparison. EFF is the best and I am proud to contribute and be a member.

The way we fix this is we would have a little potato on the web page, and just like back in the day you'd click on the SECURED BY THAWTE button to see that yes, they're encrypting your data en route, you'll go to a page that shows the audit trail for verifying the website.

Hace 15 (2011) es cuando se acabó lo de quemar billetes a lo loco.
Canonical había estado operando a perdidas para crecer a toda costa, yo creo que con el objetivo de vender como hizo con Thawte.
Pero se había convertido en un hijo tonto, asi que fuera "human beings" y se enfocaron en empresas.

DigiCert dan semua brand yang dibawahnya (RapidSSL, Geotrust, dan Thawte) sudah memberlakukan ketentuan MPIC pada tanggal 1 September 2025, lebih cepat dari ketentuan Forum CA/Browser.

There was extensive work done on the homoglyph attacks back when IDNs were first introduced. Amusingly (but not at the time) the original paper describing the attacks had to use Thawte recently acquired by VeriSign certificates rather than VeriSign because we deployed the filters on VeriSign first.

Whenever my certificates are up for renewal, I think “why don’t I just let them expire?” - it’s an intrusive Thawte.

And, I don't know if you were around for the Thawte email cert web of trust thing, but it's a precedent for decentralized identity verification, including (if I recall correctly) invalidation in the event of corruption.

So both thawte and Verisign SSL sellers have been sold to symantec....umm the option list keeps getting slimmer on this scam, my pocketbook!

Yep, that makes sense. You might already be aware of the old Thawte model for validating email certificates from the late 90's/early 2000's:

Yes to all of that. I think what will probably win is some kind of web of trust like with the old Thawte volunteer notaries who authenticated people for email certificates.

There was something in the early 2000’s associated with Thawte that involved what were effectively notaries. It was decentralized identity verification kind of similar to digital certs. That is, if a notary hierarchy was compromised, all the identities it certified were invalid.
