Dershowitz next points to a series of internal emails andphone calls at CNN, arguing that these show the network and itscommentators collaborating to deceive their viewers and damagehis reputation. For one, right after Dershowitz’s statement a CNNcorrespondent emailed then–CNN President Jeff Zucker thatDershowitz had “gone crazy.” “Yup,” Zucker replied, “Him andLindsay [sic] Graham.” And later that afternoon, Zucker held aconference call with several producers, executives, and “newsgatherers.” One producer summarized that “very brief” meeting’stakeaway as “Trump legal team making argument that a Presidentis King & can do whatever he wants.” Another producer echoedthat characterization. These communications suggest not conspiracy but sincerity, however misplaced. To start, it appears that none of thecommentators who Dershowitz says defamed him participated inZucker’s conference call. And though Dershowitz argues that theemails reveal “marching orders about how the story should bespun,” the emails themselves do not support that contention; theycontain characterizations of Dershowitz’s remarks, but nodirectives or orders. If anything, the communications tend tosupport CNN’s position that the relevant speakers believed in thetruth of their reporting.
