The "common good" is a set of shared values about what we owe one another as citizens who are bound together in the same society. A concern for the common good—keeping the common good in mind—is a moral attitude. It recognizes that we’re all in it together.

I write to you with urgency ahead of your upcoming 23 April Court meeting as the concerned (fee-paying) parent of one of your undergraduates. My reasons for writing are that I would like Court to discuss my concerns about UoG’s investments in the arms industry and the university’s response to peaceful student activism against genocide. Moreover, since I plan to raise these same concerns with the Scottish Charity Regulator, I would be grateful for your timely response because I need to demonstrate having shared these concerns “directly with the charity first” (https://www.oscr.org.uk/raise-a-concern/concern-form/). Specifically, I would like to know why you have ignored the motion - as reported in an Open Letter to the Principal - of 89.3% of votes in favour of arms divestment: 9,706 students casted votes, which is a significant number of respondents given UoG student data. I would further like to know on what grounds a peaceful student activist has been banned from campus despite their human right, under international law, to peaceful freedom of expression. As a registered charity, are you not obliged to meaningfully engage with your student beneficiaries’ democratically voiced concerns? And, crucially, do you not have a duty of care to their education and wellbeing? For example, how do you justify the presence of 18 police officers and other disproportionate security measures as well as the occurrence, under your watch, of hunger strikes during peaceful and widely-supported demonstrations? Furthermore, as a charity, UoG has specifically committed to: - the advancement of education; - the advancement of health; - the advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science. However, by refusing to meet your beneficiaries’ socially just and democratically-reached demands, you: - are actively jeopardising the education of a student by banning them from campus during their last year of studies and indirectly supporting scholasticide in Gaza by investing in a genocid… More generally, as a charity under Scottish law, you are further required to fulfil broader criteria that extend to public benefit. These criteria include: - (e) the saving of lives; - (j) the advancement of human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation; - (m) the advancement of environmental protection or improvement. However, by supporting genocide, you: - are not saving lives or advancing human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation; - are not safeguarding the environment, a public good that no war has the right to destroy. It seems to me that your refusal to meet justified demands to divest from Israel’s genocide has posed far more of a threat to students and to the reputation of the university than the demonstrations advocating for social justice and human rights have posed to the rest of the student body and the general public. Indeed, an institution of higher learning that quashes the championing of social justice is by far a greater threat to peace and democracy than non-violent student activism. In light of the above, I am further concerned that the University Court does not seem to be governing by consent. I am disgusted in Senior Management’s decision to prioritise what seem to me to be their personal bias about the importance of the defence industry over governing according to charitable principles or with the consent of its beneficiaries (i.e., its students, first and foremost). As governors of the university, you don’t have a remit to fund for-profit companies such as the arms industry but you are obliged to uphold university education as a public good for society as a whole: this includes saving all lives and safeguarding the environment for everyone. And whilst not directly enforceable under Scottish law, I would argue that the spirit of the university regulator for England and Wales equally applies to the duty of care of Scottish universities in upholding student welfare and the right to peaceful protest whilst also supporting “stu…
