The ultimate Poverty Row noir is DETOUR (1945), made at PRC by Edgar G. Ulmer, reportedly in about a week. Tiny, ugly, unforgettable, and now in the National Film Registry. Not bad for the bottom of the barrel. #TheNoirCollective

Poverty Row rules: shoot in days, not weeks. Reuse sets. Light it dark so nobody sees how cheap the walls are. Those limits helped create the noir look: shadows, fog, empty streets, and stories stripped to the bone. #TheNoirCollective
