"Have I gone so far that I can no longer see your face?"

Felt compelled to revisit this piece. :)

King Itzal stands before the old portrait of the royal family. He is wearing long black robes, his hair is unkempt and streaked with gray, and he rests a burned hand on the canvas where his wife used to be. In the portrait, Queen Chazira has become a dark, staticky silhouette with no discernable features besides a pair of eerie glowing white eyes.

"We could be a family again, the four of us at Starhold... just the way it was, together..."

An illustration depicting a wall within Starhold, the royal palace of the Blazing World. A large painting hangs from the wall within a golden frame studded with jewels. The painting is a portrait of the royal family gathered together in the palace gardens. Queen Chazira sits with the young Prince Dakkar in her lap. To her left stands Princess Margaret, and standing behind Chazira with a hand on her shoulder is her husband, King Itzal.

King Itzal has been transported to a dark, colorless realm. He kneels in a pool of water, sending ripples out across its surface as he looks up at a void-like sky. His eyes glow white and he looks enraptured with whatever he is witnessing. Around him, stars can be seen glimmering faintly under the surface of the water.

Kalfu stands in the foreground with a reckless grin, wearing his Paradise Research Institute lab coat and thrusting his hands towards the viewer as they both dissolve into a strange, dark fog. He is displaying his ability to use Shadow Transformation, aka Metamorphosis. Behind him stands King Itzal in a dark robe with glowing eyes and the broken firestone from Chazira's gift hanging as a pendant around his neck. A large pair of glowing eyes floats behind him to represent his use of Shadow Perception (using his magic to look backwards in time).

Close-up of a firestone as it breaks. The cracks across its surface glow yellow as magical energy is released. Within the stone is a fractured and slightly distorted image of Queen Chazira looking on in fear. The background is a dull, dark red with a line of static spiraling outwards.

A bright and cheery view of King Itzal's worktable. In the center is the completed device, which appears to be an iron box with golden bands and a firestone embedded in the center. Scattered on the table around it are various cogs and metallic bits left over from its creation, papers with hastily scrawled notes, and more firestones.
