We then brought in histologist Greg Funston, and he took a thin-section of the bone to examine the microstructure. He and Susie determined that the pattern of bone matched an ornithopod, making it one of the oldest fossils of that group in the world. Plus it was at least 8 years old when it died!

How about some intergrown plagioclase feldspars, in a groundmass of plagioclase and aenigmatite, with the odd bit of clinopyroxene. Cross polarised light, about x20 magnification. Basaltic Andesite, Rakaia outcrop of the Mt Somers Volcanics. 1994.
