Now the fun part: BoS says Thorkell has been “haunting the farm ever since.” BoS was likely being written in the mid-late 12th century, ~200 yrs after Thorkell supposedly lived. Imagine if a White House staffer saw (John Quincy Adams in the hallway today.) No description of *how* Thorkell haunted.

According to the Book of Settlements, Thorkell Farserk was a relative of Erik the Red who claimed the area of Hvalsey during the first wave of Icelandic settlement in #Greenland. He was supposedly very strong and a great swimmer. Thorkell only appears in this source & this is all we know about him.

It snuck out quietly, which honestly fits where Thorfinn ends up, the last stretch trades the big revenge battles for that "I have no enemies" headspace. Wild that a series that started with Thorkell throwing logs ends on farming and forgiveness.

2) Maybe it was local folklore
People don’t tend to tell the exact same story for 200yrs, BoS says he could swim a round trip to the island with livestock on his back, which sounds Paul Bunyan-esque to me. Thorkell may have been a literal local legend.

1) Maybe it was made up.
Geneaology is a major part of Icelandic literature, esp. when it comes to land ownership. Burials play a role in asserting ownership across the Norse world as landmarks etc. Thorkell poking around after 200yrs could have been a way to legitimize the current owner’s claim

Some of the events of 1066 are mentioned in #skaldic poetry. Waltheof's resistance to William, some years after his victory at Hastings #OTD is recorded in Þorkell Skallason's Valþjófsflokkr of which only two stanzas survive: skaldic.org/m.php?p=text...

We know nothing about the poet Þorkell to help contextualise the poem. But back in 2001, I argued that this poem was composed in England, for ... wikisaga.hi.is/index.php?ti...

You just clawed out a memory I didn't know I have oh my goodness

Bokuto really is Thorkell in a different world

I think if Bokuto was ever interested in cosplay cons, he would absolutely try to cosplay Thorkell and everyone would think he's roleplaying as him XD

The Icelandic family sagas are filled to the brim with Thor names. Þorgrímr, Þorkell, Þorðr, Þórólfr, etc etc. Sometimes there are several with the same name in the same saga and they have to be distinguished by nicknames.

So yeah, religious names come up in lots of places.

#AsaBoku watching Vinland Saga together and Bokuto laughing at too many Thorkell scenes. It makes Asahi wonder every time whether he should tell Bokuto anything about how similar the two are...
Yes 100% I had the same thought when I watched/read it!

i think the little glimpses of his old self we see whenever thorkell drifts back in were fun i think if his temper and his brashness had remained this low simmering background element even as he committed himself to nonviolence it wouldve been a little more engaging for me personally
