Advise people not to climb Fimmvörðuháls Gullies and cracks have opened up on the hiking trail over Fimmvörðuháls. Steep slopes and landslides have formed between Baldvinsskáli and Fimmvörðuhálsskáli. People are advised not to travel over the pass. The Icelandic Tourist Board and Útivist, as well as the Dagrenning rescue team in Hvolsvöllur, are warning people of dangerous conditions on the hiking trail over Fimmvörðuháls. They are strongly advising people not to hike over the pass. This is stated in a statement from the companies. Gullies and cracks have opened up along the route in recent years as the glacier has retreated. Steep slopes and landslides have also formed on the part of the route between Baldvinsskáli and Fimmvörðuhálsskáli where there was previously snow or glacial ice. Snow bridges have also been revealed where the winter's snow has settled. Glacial rivers flow beneath them. The companies' announcement states that crossing or approaching the glacial bridges can be very dangerous. The news was updated after the companies changed their advice. Not to worry, it's prone to happen with unfamiliar languages. But for example going from Þórsmörk to 'Porsmork' which is then pronounced as "Poor smuck" is outright painful, esp because the original is not too difficult to pronounce (very similar to "Thor's mirk", also close to its literal meaning)

I would recommend a south coast tour vik, skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss. If it’s summer take a day tour to þorsmórk. Golden circle is always good for a first time. Don’t forget SkyLagoon and local swimming pools.

Well, you can just do a day hike to the bridge and back (roughly halfway to Þórsmörk) which is about 10m total and passes 20 waterfalls. The Laugavegur hike I would say is usually 5 days if you start from/end at Skógafoss, but it's more often done just from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. It's amazing!

I did, it was, & - thankfully - it was! Which is not to say it didn't also rain every day - it was Iceland, after all! On a previous aborted attempt (weather) we did just the Fimmvörðuháls trail, Þórsmörk-Skógafoss, so when I finished this one I'd officially completed Landmannalaugar-Skógafoss! 😊

Ooh I was there that very same year, but a little earlier in the month - I'm going to check my pix for flow now, imagine if it was in full flow and I just didn't notice at the time! 😂 (we just hiked from Þórsmörk-Skógar & were rushing to catch the bus so I *may* have been distracted! 😂)

Undoubtedly my finest journey has been the Laugavegur trail from Landmannalaugar to Skógafoss, completed virtually with Pacer Jan'21 (for the medal in pix 3&4), Þórsmörk-Skógar (5&6) in Aug'21, & Landmannalaugar-Þórsmörk Aug'23 🏅🥾

& of course it doesn't help that it's a 'movable feast' with the river changing course in the valley from season to season, so you can't put a reliable bridge in for traffic! Still, adds to the experience imho, I loved watching crossings (& travelling in the coaches!) Easier to move the footbridge 😂
