Tomb Raider is, i think, one of the most video games.

like when i think "video games", Tomb Raider 1996 is overrepresented in the abstract thoughtcloud of things that phrase encompasses.

Lara standing at the base of a larger sphinx, so large that the game can't render its entire size, fading the giant statue in darkness for great atmospheric effect, though somewhat ruined by another crawling Atlantean standing on its hind legs and being very annoying, bragging about how they have a bigger sphinx that everyone else and just how awesome and cool they are.

Lara's adventures finally lead her to a remote island where Natla's set up base, near an ancient Atlantean pyramid, its interior covered in a beautiful red carpet, its brown walls filled with Inca ornaments and statues as well as a couple of feisty, red velociraptors, so naturally Lara pulls out her double pistols and starts popping the fools.

St. Francis' Folly seems to hide a lot of secrets underneath, like a huge colosseum as well as the Palace Midas, with a collapsed statue with only the legs still standing upright on top of a raised pedestal with the name "MIDAS" written on it, as well as on of the stone hands lying flat on the ground.

The main puzzle of the level requires multiple ore bars to be placed on the hand to be turned into gold, but if Lara clumsily steps on the giant hand, she turns into a shiny golden statue herself, prematurely ending her adventure.
