Very excited to visit Flowers Cove in Newfoundland, famous for its Thrombolites, fossils of organisms more than 650 million years old. Incredibly rare, with these large examples only here or in Western Australia. Created when microorganisms photosynthesised their food #thrombolite #flowerscove

These thrombolites in the Upper Cambrian Petit Jardin Formation are worth the stop if you find yourself in western Newfoundland.

#scape #EastCoastKin Friday is scape day. a windy day at Lake Clifton. It felt like the wind gave some texture to the water. Lake Clifton is a couple of hours south of Perth, WA and is famous for its thrombolites

Back to the Late Neoproterozoic to Early Paleozoic when the ancient Iapetus Ocean existed. Photosynthetic microbes flourished and developed into the thrombolites preserved in Flower's Cove, western Newfoundland.

Thrombolites - a type of stromatolites - growing in the lake waters in Western Australia. These non-laminated blue green algae mats are thriving on brackish to fresh water. Quite amazing.

currently the GSWA is only refering to thrombolites in Lake Thetis storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/41c0...
your guide was probably refering to the consensus at the time of your trip

About an hour south of Perth (near Mandurah) is Lake Clifton with thrombolites (a Threatened Ecological Community). Easy day trip. Can a walk around the lake in bushland at Yalgorup NP at Martins Tank campsite.

Lake Thetis is long day trip or stay at Cervantes. Wider area was badly burnt Dec 2024.

So what’s the consensus ruling on Lake Thetis? Was my geologist guide wrong that stromatolites are present there? Or is it just that there are also thrombolites?

Yesterday we saw Thrombolites. They’re the remains of some of the earliest known forms of life on Earth.

There are lacustrine thrombolites closer to home, if the flight to Perth seems a bit much. I used to take students out to Dead Man's Point at Green Lakes State Park, outside Syracuse NY.

Ironically, I recognized the beach faintly when I went to check it out. Took family trips there as a toddler!

We walked out in the lashing rain on a 6c Newfoundland summer’s day to check out some Thrombolites and have lived to tell the tale. 🌧️

So stromatolites form continuous layers on the seafloor and grow upwards. They can be mounded, columnar, even conical depending on the strength of waves/currents and the rate of sediment input. Thrombolites are like stromatolites but with an irregular, clotted texture instead of distinct layers.

Lake Clifton Mandurah, W.A: largest reef of living thrombolites in S. Hemisphere, rare living fossils. Rock-like formations in the photo are microscopic organisms 2,000 yrs old, among 1st creatures producing oxygen, making life possible. Their ancestors predate man, dinosaurs and plants.

Low tide but impressive still

Well, there are living thrombolites over in Green Lake near Syracuse ...
February 8, 2026 at 1:55 AM
I can speak to that. Stromatolites are the finely layered structures, thrombolites are not layered. See figure 1 here

I can't even ... a high five, in the face, with a chair ... twice, methinks, for those happy, snappy chappies.

People did the same thing to the 2000 year old thrombolites in SW WA, chasing photographs of the aurora.

Yesterday was the last official day of our trip. While bittersweet all things must come to an end sometime. The poor older lady in our group was confused and heartbroken though. Our guide was great, and took us to more Indigenous centres than others would see.
