Semitic languages continue to be spoken in Ethiopia(Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigrean among others) and Eritrea(primarily Tigrinya). Amharic has vastly more native speakers than Hebrew does. Tigrayan & Tigrinya also have more native speakers than Hebrew does.

“Zewdalem is an Ethiopian name and surname (primarily of Amharic and Tigrinya origin) that translates to "the diadem is mine" or "my diadem" (derived from the root word zewd or zewde, = "👑," combined with the possessive suffix -alem or related elements = "my" or referring to lineage/status).”

An AI translated "intravenous antibiotics" into "intravenous insecticides" in Tigrinya, a language spoken by 9 million people.

When AI safety is built only in English, these are the failures nobody catches. A sharp Rest of World read. 🌍

AI safety is designed in the West, and failing users everywhere
OpenAI’s pause shows the risks of rapid AI development, as safety frameworks fail to account for non-Western languages and contexts where harms are felt most.

I love the very specific and slightly surprising "bring me cucumbers".

I've just submitted a piece about things that travel from Venice to Ethiopia in ca. 1400 CE, drawing mostly on a Latin-Arabic and Latin-Amharic/Tigrinya phrasebook that could be this one's distant-yet-not-at-all cousin.

Yes. Anti-Apartheid and Anti-genocide are not Antisemitism. As far as I'm aware, Semitic was a term given to people in the Middle East and the horn of Africa in the 19th century that spoke the languages Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic, Aramaic and Tigrinya and not all were the Jewish people.

Dr Nigatu was recognised for her work investigating gender bias in machine translation for three low-resourced Ethiopian languages: Amharic, Tigrinya and Afan Oromo. The project supported seven Ethiopian female students as paid researchers, with funding, compute access and mentorship.

“

Tsigereda (also spelled Tsegereda) = "rose" or "rose flower" in the Ethiopian languages of Amharic and Tigrinya. [1] (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsigereda), [2] (www.reddit.com/r/Ethiopia/c...), [3] (www.names.org/n/tsegereda/...) “

WOULD BE TOUGH2find as a premade name

yet customized can be done

“Tigrinya: Linguistically closer to ancient Ge'ez. Communication tends to be far more blunt, literal, and plainspoken.”

Contrasts from Amharic in being far more blunt

Guttural

Throaty

Harsh

& plain spoken?

Isn’t as fluttery

Full of multiple innuendos as Amharic is

‘Semites’ really refers to people who speak Semitic languages. Hebrew is that; so too is Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya, Aramaic, modern South Arabian languages and more. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

Ethiopia’s Ashenda festival: Tigray cancels event celebrating the Virgin Mary over drone attack fears
The three-day festival of Ashenda takes places as Orthodox Christians commemorate the Virgin Mary. Its name means "the tall green grass" in Tigrinya and has grown into a wider cultural event that celebrates women. It is eagerly anticipated by girls and young women in Tigray and other parts of northern Ethiopia. They dress up, braid their hair in a special way and are free to dance and play together outside, something which is traditionally frowned upon at other times of the year.
