An Eastern Kingbird has built its nest at the top of a dead snag. Two hungry chicks look at the parental unit perched above them wondering where their lunch is. A colorful Black-collared Barbet clings to an equally colorful flower stalk which the photographer neglected to identify. A tiny black and yellow Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird perches on a small tree branch, a bright orange berry in its beak. A Green Heron crouches on the edge of a bank; it is concentrating on something in the brown-green water just out of our view.

Strikingly marked miniature barbet. Adults have a red patch above the bill, but immatures lack this. Found in woodland and savanna, ranging from arid to moderately moist. Most common call is a monotonously repeated “took” call that is sometimes given hundreds of times consecutively. Also gives a higher 2- or 3-part call and a fast trill.

An adorable yellow-fronted tinkerbird has made its home within a carved out hole in a tree trunk. I watched it every evening come in to roost.

The Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, Pogoniulus chrysoconus, is a small critter in the Barbet family, hence it was formerly known as the Yellow-fronted Tinker Barbet. They will eat misteltoe fruits then regurgitate the sticky seed, wipe it clean on a branch and redistribute it. The Great Dispenser #birds
