Malaysia's first 100 MW / 400 MWh grid-forming BESS is more than a storage project. It provides voltage reference, frequency support and synthetic inertia while giving TNB operational experience with utility-scale batteries. Fast execution: 309 days.

From bin to biogas
As Malaysia scales its adoption of waste-to-energy (WtE) solutions, the research and innovation arm of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is running a pilot project to convert food waste into biogas and other by-products. Since 2018, TNB Research Sdn Bhd has been operating an anaerobic digestion facility in Kajang for organic waste research and technology validation. A torrefaction system was added in 2020. Food waste used in these pilot systems is sourced from nearby hotels, local eateries and food service facilities within TNB premises, providing a realistic representation of urban food waste streams, said TNB Research head of research centre (decarbonisation and renewable energy) Noraziah Muda @ Omar. Among the key milestones are the conversion of biogas into renewable natural gas and the production of pyrolysis oil from the torrefaction system. “These outcomes demonstrate TNB’s ability to move up the value chain by converting waste into higher-value energy products, while strengthening readiness for future scale-up.” Anaerobic digestion is a process through which bacteria break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. It produces two outputs: biogas (composed of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, water vapour and other gases) and digestate, referring to the residual liquid and solid materials left after...

TNB 100MW Dungun Smart Energy bank boost grid stability, supports national agenda, says DPM Fadillah
DUNGUN: The Santong battery energy storage system (BESS) project, with a capacity of 100MW/400MWh and developed by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), marks a significant step in strengthening electricity grid stability and supporting Malaysia’s energy transition agenda, says Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said the project is among the country’s earliest large-scale utility BESS initiatives, aimed at supporting wider integration of renewable energy into the national electricity supply system. "This has long been planned under the National Energy Transition Roadmap, not only in terms of diversifying the country’s energy mix for our energy generation, but also in addressing supply requirements," he told a press conference here after the project's inauguration on Monday (May 18). "When energy is generated, it must be supplied to the grid, and Malaysia currently has many renewable energy sources being produced, including solar energy and others. "To ensure the grid remains stable at all times, batteries are one of the methods used to guarantee not only sufficient energy supply but also supply stability, thereby ensuring the overall stability of the grid. "In this regard, the system has been implemented and is recognised as Malaysia’s first...
